The Fox

Mondays are my big laundry days.  I usually wash as many clothes and towels as my 6 laundry baskets can hold and have a folding marathon in front of the TV while watching Dancing with the Stars, which, along with The Amazing Race, are my TV shows (not counting Friends re-runs...).

A few weeks ago, I was intrigued with a song that was played in one of the group dances.  I remember thinking the beat was cool but the lyrics were odd.  I was in mid-fold of a shirt watching man-sized foxes dancing around the floor with the girls and I was stumped by the whole performance...the song, the dance, the motions, EVERYTHING...but I was mesmerized at the same time.  One thing I couldn't get past was the costumes the dancers wore!  I mean, the guys were dressed up like foxes and the girls were wearing ties! I thought they looked so kookie. They also kept doing these silly hand-droopy motions, as if they were acting like prissy little girls!  I was so baffled by the song and the costumes (and everything else!) that I figured I'd look into the song a little more.

After Googling something like "what does the fox say dancing with the stars", I found out the song was written by a comedian duo of brothers from Norway.  The whole point of the song is to lament the question of what sounds the fox makes.  Because dogs go "woof" and birds go "tweet" and cows go "moo" and cat goes "meow"; we all know what these animals say. Apparently an elephant goes "toot" and a seal goes "ow ow ow", but I'll take the Norwegian's word on those.  The question, though, is what DOES a fox really SAY? I mean, if you were reading a story to your pre-schooler and there was a picture of a fox, what sound WOULD you make to your kids? I wouldn't have a clue! BUT now I do, thanks to those Norweigans! After reading the lyrics and cracking up watching the video, I have deemed these comedic brothers genius! And thanks to them, I can't get this song out of my head! I decided to share this weird/crazy/hilarious song with my kids (because sharing it with my kids will DEFINITELY help get the song out of my head (...I say with dripping sarcasm)).

This song and video has now become a bit of an obsession in our house, and not just for the kids! We've actually taken a poll as to what we each think the fox says:
Mallory- "A-oo-oo-oo-ooo!
Ethan - A-hee-ahee ha-hee!"
Evan - Joff-tchoff-tchoffo-tchoffo-tchoff!
Me - Fraka-kaka-kaka-kaka-kow!

We've watched the video at least a dozen times and this past Tuesday, the kids spent an hour up in my Squirrely's room making costumes for a "performance" of The Fox.  I couldn't help myself with snapping a few pictures of the craziness.  I was actually quite impressed with what they came up with!

And I actually don't mind watching this video over and over because I have to confess, I dig it.

You might dig it, too.   Be fore warned...

And after watching the video, I TOTALLY got the Dancing with the Stars performance!

  1. We discovered this song EXACTLY the same way - watching the performance on DWTS. We Googled it during a commercial break and decided that the performance made a lot more sense. We have watched/listened to it several times since then on YouTube, and Uncle David played it for Gommy the other day while she was here. SO when she reads this post, SHE will have a clue of what's going on too! Ha!!

For the record, Uncle David likes "Ring ding ding ding ding-ga ding!" and Aunt Amanda agrees with Evan "Joff-tchoff-tchoffo-tchoffo-tchoff!" We'll have to get back to you regarding Liam's opinion.

"What is his sound?" [involuntary head bobbing]

  2. Ha! I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was confused and bewildered!!! :-) Love ya, sister!
